Mustang World Series preview

Entering its 23rd year and fourth-consecutive in Youngsville, Louisiana, PONY Baseball and PONY's South Zone is proud to announce the Mustang World Series. Eight teams, including three international, will battle it out on the diamond tomorrow through Sunday to determine a world champion of PONY Baseball.

Following the tournament's opening ceremonies, Game #1, which is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT/US, will feature East Zone Champion Wilmington (Winter Park Optimist), North Carolina and Asia-Pacific Zone Champion Indonesia. Wilmington is coming off a victory last weekend at the Mustang East Zone Championships last weekend in Richmond, Virginia, where the team scored 62 runs in three games en route to a title, beating Rolando Paulino, New York 22-12 in the championship game. After losing to the Philippines 14-13 in pool play, when it mattered most, Indonesia rematched and defeated the five-time defending Asia-Pacific Zone Champions 7-4 in the championship game of the Mustang Asia-Pacific Zone Championships in Singapore on June 11.

Wilmington is looking to win a Mustang World Series title for the state of North Carolina and PONY'S East Zone for the first time. Likewise, Indonesia is vying to win the nation's and PONY's Asia-Pacific Zone's first Mustang World Series title.

In Game #2, also at 6 p.m. CT/US, South Zone Champion Tampa (Skyway), Florida faces North Zone Champion Chicago (AFCA), Illinois. Tampa went undefeated at the 16-team Mustang South Zone Championships in Tampa last weekend, ultimately beating San Antonio, Texas 19-9 in the championship game. At the Mustang North Zone Championships in Mt. Vernon, Illinois last weekend, Chicago, Illinois also went undefeated and rolled to victory by way of an 18-8 victory over Host Mt. Vernon.

Miami (Tamiami) last won the Mustang World Series for the state of Florida in 2008, its fourth in a six-year period from 2003-08. The South Zone owns eight Mustang World Series titles, tying the West Zone for most of any of PONY's Zones. Chicago is looking to win the state's and the North Zone's first Mustang World Series title.

Game #3, which begins at 8 p.m. CT/US, pits Caribbean Zone Champion Paradera, Aruba against Mexico Zone Champion Tijuana, Baja California. Paradera won the Mustang Caribbean Zone Championships in Aruba back in early July, while Tijuana won the Mustang Mexico Zone Championships in Minatitlan, Veracruz in late April.

Aruba is hoping to win the nation's first Mustang World Series title and the Caribbean Zone's first since Caguas (Villa Nueva), Puerto Rico won it in 2009. Puerto Rico has won all of the Caribbean Zone's five titles overall. Tijuana is looking to become the Mexico Zone's first Mustang World Series champion.

In Game #4, which also begins at 8 p.m. CT/US, Santa Clarita (William S. Hart), California battles Host Youngsville, Louisiana. After falling 8-6 to East Oahu, Hawaii in the semifinals, Santa Clarita fought back to beat East Oahu 13-2 in a rematch to reach the finals, and Santa Clarita beat Irvine, California 7-4 in the championship game for the West Zone's title and Mustang World Series automatic bid.

Santa Clarita (William S. Hart) has won four Mustang World Series titles (1998, 2007 and 2010-11). The state of California owns the most Mustang World Series titles out of any U.S. state or international country with eight, and it is also the defending Mustang World Series champions (Simi Valley). Host Youngsville hopes to protect its own house and win its first Mustang World Series title.
