Mustang World Series day two recap

As the old saying goes, sometimes the best is saved for last. That was arguably the case Friday during day two at the Mustang World Series in Youngsville, Louisiana, as Santa Clarita (Wm. S. Hart), California's Lincoln Daly's walk off home run in extra innings to defeat Chicago (AFCA), Illinois highlighted the day. The tournament had to say their goodbyes to two teams, while Santa Clarita and Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico advanced to the semifinals thanks to two close wins.

Game #5: Jakarta, Indonesia 8 Paradera, Aruba 4

Thanks, in part, to a four-run top of the sixth inning in which it was able to build a comfortable five-run lead, Asia-Pacific Zone Champion Jakarta, Indonesia survived and advanced, after defeating Caribbean Zone Champion Paradera, Aruba 8-4 in an elimination Game #5 on day two at the Mustang World Series.

In a one-run game (4-3) after five complete innings, Jakarta was finally able to break through in the top of the sixth, thanks to some help from its opponent Paradera. Jakarta's Adika Ladiansya led off the inning by reaching on an error, and after being replaced by pinch runner Michael Leonardo, Leonardo was balked to second base. Then, Rashad Harmoko singled, as Leonardo scored on the throw home to make it 5-3, and Harmoko trotted into second.

On the next at-bat, Reagan Cherdasa reached on another Paradera error and Harmoko scored from second base. After a walk to Gerhard Nathaniel, he advanced to second base on defensive indifference, setting up two runners in scoring position for Jakarta. On a wild pitch, after a pitching change, Cherdasa scored and Nathaniel moved up a base. Go Kawahara next came through with an RBI single, completing the scoring for the inning and giving the Asia-Pacific Zone Champions an 8-3 lead with one frame to play.

The Caribbean Zone Champions got a run back in the bottom of the sixth, after Yoxander Pilier singled and moved around to third on a steal and balk, setting the table for Narvin Meyer to cash him in on a single (8-4). But the Indonesia lead proved to be too much to overcome, as a ground out ended the game.

Harmoko paced Jarkarta's offense by going 3-for-3 at the plate in the game, while Clarence Noguera and Pilier both led Paradera with two hits apiece.

The win advances Jakarta to another elimination Game #9 Saturday at 10 a.m. CT/US against East Zone Champion Wilmington (Winter Park Optimist), North Carolina, while the loss eliminates Paradera. The Arubans will still get to play in a Consolation seventh place game Saturday at Noon against Host Youngsville, Louisiana.

Game #7: Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico 9 Wilmington (Winter Park Optimist), North Carolina 7

East Zone Champion Wilmington, North Carolina rallied in the top of the sixth inning to score four runs and cut its deficit to two, but the rally was not enough, as the squad fell 9-7 to Mexico Zone Champion Tijuana, Baja California 9-7 in Game #7 of the Mustang World Series.

Wilmington struck first in the top of the first inning, when it was able to score three runs on a passed ball and a Tijuana error. But Tijuana struck back with two runs of its own in the bottom of the first thanks to a Karin Garcia sacrifice fly that scored Arturo Chavez and a wild pitch on the next at-bat that scored David Mosqueda (3-2 Wilmington).

In the bottom of the second, Rene Rodriguez and Mossqueda both scored on wild pitches to give Mexico a lead (4-3). A double play in the field seemed to ignite the Mexico Zone champs at the plate in the bottom of the third, as they went on a five-run rally. During the inning, three-consecutive doubles by Rodriguez, Ethan Otero and Chavez led to three runs and the team scored two more on an RBI walk and ground out (9-3 Tijuana).

It wasn't until the top of the sixth until Wilmington got hot at the plate. Back-to-back singles and a two-RBI double by John McKernan started the rally. After advancing to third, McKernan scored on a Mexico error to cut the lead to three. After an out, an RBI double by Andrew Piner scored another run, but a line out ended the game by way of a 9-7 final score.

Garcia pitched well in his five innings on the mound for Mexico, as he allowed four earned (six total) runs on six hits and a walk, while striking out seven.

With the win, Tijuana advances to a winner's bracket Game #11semifinal at 6 p.m. CT/US Saturday against the winner of Game #9 between Wilmington and Jakarta, which begins at 10 a.m. CT/US.
