Top High School Prospect, and PONY Alum, Gears Up for MLB Draft

Pennsylvania, especially the Pittsburgh area, is not particularly known for baseball talent, but when players like Cole Young pop up every once in a while, it makes scouts wonder why they don’t look there more often.

With the MLB Draft quickly approaching, Young is expected to extend the streak of Western Pennsylvania prospects getting drafted in the first round to two years as the Reds drafted fellow PONY alum, Austin Hendrick, as a first rounder last year. He would also become the seventh player from the WPIAL to be selected in the first round out of high school.

Young is a left handed hitting shortstop who is ranked as the 20th best prospect in the entire draft and is also ranked as the fourth best shortstop available. The 18 year old possesses rare bat-to-ball skills that translates to minimal strike outs. He might not leave the park as much as other prospects available, but Young still has the power to hit the gaps for extra bases.

His talent was first displayed at a high level in 2014 at ten years old where he was the MLB Pitch, Hit, and Run champion. Because of this accomplishment, he was granted the opportunity to throw out the first pitch of the Pony League World Series that same year.

Young is a recent graduate of North Allegheny High School and was invited to attend the MLB Draft Combine last month. If he decides not to sign with whichever team drafts him, Young will be heading to Duke University to continue his baseball career.

Watch Cole Young’s name get called on July 17-19th during the MLB Draft on ESPN or MLB Network.
