Day 2 of the Pony-13 World Series
Game 5 - Chicago, Illinois (2) vs. Brownsville, Texas (6)
Brownsville, Texas used a strong fourth-inning rally and a solid pitching performance to defeat Chicago, Illinois 6-2 on Saturday at Aviara Community Park. Brownsville got on the board early, manufacturing a run in the bottom of the first inning when L. Frady grounded out to bring a runner home and give his team a 1-0 lead.
Chicago responded in the top of the fourth with a surge of their own. J. Perez provided the spark, launching a two-run home run over the left field fence to give Chicago a brief 2-1 lead and swing momentum in their direction. However, Brownsville answered quickly and decisively in the bottom of the fourth. A. Cavazos tied the game with a sacrifice fly, and moments later, P. Tovar delivered a clutch two-run single to put Brownsville back in front, 4-2. They tacked on two more insurance runs in the fifth to stretch the lead to 6-2 and never looked back.
On the mound, N. Torres led the way for Brownsville, tossing 3.2 strong innings while allowing just three hits and two runs. He struck out five and didn’t issue a walk. The bullpen followed with shutout relief to secure the win. Chicago starter J. Carpio worked three innings, giving up three hits and three runs while striking out one and walking one. Offensively, Perez powered Chicago’s lineup with a two-run homer, while B. Chapman was a bright spot at the plate, going 2-for-3 to lead the team in hits.
Brownsville’s offense was paced by P. Tovar, who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Frady and M. Solis also collected two hits apiece, while R. Jr. contributed with a pair of RBIs. The Brownsville lineup showed balance and patience throughout the game, capitalizing on key opportunities to drive in runs.
Defensively, Brownsville was clean and efficient, not committing a single error. L. Olmeda anchored the defense with a team-high eight chances in the field. With the win, Brownsville continues to show they’re a force to be reckoned with, combining timely hitting, reliable pitching, and mistake-free defense to keep their tournament run alive. J. Perez #25 was the MVP. He hit 2 home runs today, and today is his birthday!
Congratulations to Chicago, IL on their 2025 PONY-13 World Series Appearance! The team finished with a 0-2 record, and have been eliminated from the tournament. Brownsville, TX will face loser of the Game 8: Tijuana, Baja, Mexico vs. San Diego.
Game 6 - Altoona, Pennsylvania (2) vs. Placentia, California (3)
Despite out-hitting Placentia, California eight to seven, Altoona, Pennsylvania came up just short in a tightly contested 3-2 loss on Saturday at Aviara Community Park. Altoona came out swinging, grabbing an early lead with runs in the first and second innings. C. Lechner got things started with an RBI single in the opening frame, and R. Daniels added to the advantage in the second with a sharp single down the right field line, bringing the score to 2-0.
Placentia remained composed and slowly chipped away at the deficit. In the sixth inning, G. Oborn grounded into a fielder’s choice, scoring a run to tie the game at 2-2. Then, in the top of the eighth, Oborn came through once again — this time drawing a bases-loaded walk to bring home the go-ahead run and put Placentia ahead for good, 3-2. Although Altoona continued to make solid contact, they couldn’t break through Placentia’s timely defense, which turned a remarkable three double plays throughout the game to stall multiple threats.
On the mound, K. Meloy delivered a gritty performance for Altoona, tossing 7.1 innings while allowing just seven hits and three runs (two earned). He struck out three and walked one in a strong outing. D. Godsey got the start for Placentia, working 1.2 innings and giving up five hits and two runs before the bullpen stepped in and shut things down the rest of the way. Placentia pitchers combined for six strikeouts on the day.
Altoona had contributions up and down the lineup, with eight different players — C. Butler, P. Jones, K. Shields, M. Mellott, M. Bonin, R. Daniels, C. Lechner, and K. Meloy — each recording one hit. Daniels and Lechner drove in the team’s only two runs. Bonin also showed his speed on the basepaths, swiping two bases. The defense turned one double play in support of Meloy’s effort on the mound. For Placentia, Oborn was the difference-maker, finishing the day with two RBIs despite not recording a hit. J. Jeon was a catalyst at the top of the lineup, going 2-for-4. Placentia's clean defensive play and timely pitching helped seal the win, despite being out-hit.
Although Altoona, Pennsylvania came up short, their performance showed resilience and balance, proving they can compete with the top teams in the tournament. Placentia, meanwhile, continues to find ways to win in close games — a key trait in championship-caliber teams.
Congratulations to Altoona, PA on their 2025 PONY-13 World Series Appearance! The team finished with a 0-2 record, and have been eliminated from the tournament. Placentia, CA will face the loser of Game 7: Carlsbad, CA vs. Chinandega Nicaragua.
Game 7 - Carlsbad, CA (3) vs. Chinandega Nicaragua (1)
In a game defined by elite pitching on both sides, Carlsbad, California edged out Chinandega, Nicaragua 3-1 on Saturday at Aviara Community Park. Carlsbad wasted no time jumping ahead in the bottom of the first inning. W. Peabody drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in the first run, and M. Lohre followed by grounding into a fielder’s choice — but a fielding miscue allowed two runs to cross the plate, giving Carlsbad a quick 3-0 advantage.
Those three runs proved to be all Carlsbad would need, thanks to a stellar effort from their pitching staff. J. Tran got the start and was sharp, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings while allowing just one hit, striking out six, and walking one. T. Hall entered in relief and was dominant, firing 3.2 innings of shutout baseball with seven strikeouts and no walks while surrendering only one hit. Together, the duo combined for 13 strikeouts and held Chinandega to just three total hits on the day.
Chinandega’s starter D. Valle also turned in a solid outing despite the early trouble, giving up only two hits and three runs (all in the first inning) across three innings. He struck out three and walked one before handing the ball off to the bullpen, which kept Carlsbad off the board for the remainder of the game. Carlsbad's offense was limited to just three hits, but made them count. R. Nishimoto and Tran each picked up a hit from the top of the order, while Lohre led the team with two RBIs. Despite not adding to their early lead, Carlsbad’s efficient pitching and clean defense kept them firmly in control.
Chinandega, Nicaragua got on the board in the fourth inning, when E. Lopez drove in a run with a single. Lopez, along with N. Salinas and E. Solorzano, accounted for Chinandega’s three hits. Defensively, Chinandega played a clean game with no errors, and Solorzano led the way with five chances in the field. The win was a testament to Carlsbad’s ability to capitalize early and then rely on dominant pitching and steady defense to shut the door. With the victory, they continue to build momentum as the tournament progresses.
Chinandega Nicaragua will face Placentia, CA on July 27 at 9:00AM. Carlsbad, CA will face Chiba, Japan on July 27 at 3:00PM.
Game 8 - Tijuana, Baja, Mexico (9) vs. San Diego, California (4)
San Diego, California couldn’t overcome a mid-game surge from Tijuana, Baja, Mexico, falling 9-4 on Saturday at Aviara Community Park. After two scoreless innings, Tijuana broke through in the bottom of the third. A. Jimenez got things going with an RBI single to center, followed by a costly San Diego error that allowed another run to score. J. Rosales then ripped a double down the left field line, capping the inning and giving Tijuana a 3-0 lead.
San Diego responded with four runs of their own, but Tijuana took control for good in the bottom of the fifth. R. Ruvalcaba doubled to bring in a run, and J. Avila delivered the big blow — a three-run homer to center field. M. Reyes followed with an RBI triple, extending the lead to 8-4. Tijuana would tack on another run to seal the game at 9-4. On the mound, R. Ham started for San Diego, allowing four runs (only one earned) on three hits over 3.1 innings while striking out two and walking one. J. Rosales got the start for Tijuana and was effective, going 6.2 innings while allowing five hits and four runs, striking out eight and walking just one.
San Diego’s offense was led by W. Lara Jr., who drove in three runs from the number seven spot in the lineup and finished the game 2-for-3. Despite solid at-bats, San Diego was held to five total hits on the day.
Tijuana’s bats stayed hot throughout the contest, collecting 10 hits as a team. Reyes and Jimenez each notched two hits, while Avila led the team with three RBIs thanks to his clutch home run. Tijuana also applied pressure on the base paths, swiping six stolen bases to keep the San Diego defense on edge. Defensively, Tijuana was flawless, committing no errors in the field. I. Soto was active at shortstop, leading the team with eight chances. The win highlighted Tijuana’s all-around strength — timely hitting, aggressive baserunning, and efficient pitching — while San Diego showed fight but couldn’t recover after Tijuana’s explosive fifth inning.
Tijuana, Baja, Mexico will face Vega Alta, Puerto Rico on July 27 at 6:00PM. San Diego will face Brownsville, TX on July 27 at 12:00PM.
