In Memoriam of John Northrop

John Northrop was a foundational supporter of PONY Baseball and Softball. His impact will be felt and remembered for generations.

Northrop’s connection to PONY Baseball and Softball dates back to our earliest days. When PONY Baseball and Softball was formed in 1951, the Northrop family donated office space for the league’s first headquarters.

In recognition of those lasting contributions, PONY Baseball and Softball President Abe Key presented Northrop with the organization’s highest honor in 2017, inducting him onto the PONY Baseball and Softball Wall of Fame. The presentation took place during opening ceremonies at the Pony League World Series in 2017.

Beyond PONY Baseball and Softball, Northrop was co-owner of the Observer-Reporter in 1966 alongside his brother, William Northrop, continuing a family legacy that stretched back to 1902. Long before leading the newspaper, he worked in nearly every role imaginable, selling advertising, covering school boards, drawing editorial cartoons, and listening closely to the community he served.

Northrop was also a founding trustee of the Washington County Community Foundation.
